Onze vrijwilliger Rob Bosch helpt momenteel mee met een project in India, in Patna. Patna is de hoofdstad van de Indiase deelstaat Bihar. De stad is gelegen in het gelijknamige district Patna, aan de zuidelijke oevers van de Ganges en heeft 1.4 miljoen inwoners.

Twee docentes van het Sophianum college te Gulpen (waarmee we ook in Senegal werken), Marijke Dorigo en Miets Rondeel-Leunissen, ondersteunen daar het Sofia Centre.

De dames hebben in korte tijd 12 grote 2e hands laptops gedoneerd gekregen. Rob heeft deze nagekeken en geïnstalleerd met Edubuntu en Sugar zodat de leerlingen de komende 2 jaar voldoende educatieve programma´s hebben. Voor zover bekend de 1e keer dat dit gebeurt is. Net als bij de XO kun je in 20 seconden switchen van Sugar naar Edubuntu zonder opnieuw op te starten. Sugar wordt inmiddels op bijna 3 miljoen XO laptopjes gebruikt, het aantal scholen dat Edubuntu gebruikt vindt je hier (zeker geen complete lijst).

Daarna heeft hij Marijke een introductiecursus Edubuntu en Sugar gegeven zodat ze de zusters aldaar kan helpen opstarten.

We run the “Sofia Centre” for young girls and boys who cannot go to established schools. A house to house survey assessed the causes – as expected, poverty, absent parents (day labourers), unwillingness to educate girls.

Ours is a non-formal school with times adjusted to when the girls are free (having finished the cleaning and cooking at home!) They are given the basic education of reading and writing to be able to sign their names and a good grounding in needlework and embroidery which puts them into the category of non-formal workers and enables them to sew for themselves and to earn a living.

Today those who are good in studies, we support the girls to continue their education with the help of some generous donors.

Where do the children go from Sofia Centre after 4 years?
We prepare the children to get into the main stream-the free run Government schools. Most all children pass the entrance test to the 5th grade. However some caught up in domestic and economic problems tend to discontinue their education.

 

In the summer of 2009 Frits Hoff visited several schools in India, on invitation of the foundation Global Xploration.

Frits presented several solutions for using IT in education.

  • Software: Windows XP, Edubuntu, KDE and Sugar.

The schools preferred the OLPC concept so in November 2009, during the visit of teachers and pupils in the Netherlands, every school received 4 laptops and training in how to use the XO laptop and the Sugar software.
